It's never too late for Jewish adults to acquire the knowledge and skills that enable them to lead congregational worship.
For adults who lacked the opportunity to celebrate becoming b'nei mitzvah in their youth, the Temple periodically offers an intensive two-year program that prepares members for this affirmation of Jewish spiritual adulthood.
Prospective b'nei mitzvah students first meet the prerequisite of understanding basic Hebrew and Jewish prayer, which is taught in our yearlong Beginning Hebrew class, offered weekly on Sunday mornings. With that foundation, b'nei mitzvah students learn to chant and interpret the Torah. Learning culminates in a class “graduation” at Shavuot services in late May or early June. Participants share in leading parts of the service; individually, each also has an opportunity to share personal reflections on his or her experience.
When the program is offered, it is announced in our fall programming brochure. For more information, please contact Rabbi Fox's office at (213) 388-2401.
