The lights of Chanukah symbolize all the values for which our people have struggled. That Maccabean struggle continues in our day. It is the pursuit of equal rights for all people and the realization of a society of genuine democracy. It is striving for a world where the oppressive forces of hunger, sickness, ignorance, and prejudice no longer tyrannize or torture the visions of human beings. This is a time of year in which giving tzedakah, living by our values to help others, holds great significance. Let the lights of Chanukah light our way toward creating a righteous and compassionate world.
Chanukah celebrates the victory of the Maccabees. Israel's existence and prosperity is a daily victory over the nations that would destroy her; and the nations that deny her. This Chanukah, give a State of Israel Bond. Give a gift that will strengthen Israel; a gift that sends the Chanukah message of Jewish freedom, Jewish strength, and a long/prosperous Jewish future. When you give an Israel Bond during Chanukah, you say, “Be a Maccabee.” Israel and our people and Jerusalem matter to me and I want them to matter to you. Give a gift with values, a gift that will increase in value, too.
