Zayyit (olive tree): Combined 5th and 6th grade

Fifth Grade

Fifth graders continue to explore Jewish values and specifically learn about being b’tzelem Elohim, created in the image of God. Through study of modern and historical prophets, the children see how Jewish values create and influence their own character development.

As they strengthen their Hebrew skills, prayer study for bar and bat mitzvah becomes a reality.

Sixth Grade

The main focus of this group is preparation for a life reflecting the values and traditions of our people. Participants continue development of a positive Jewish identity while learning about what it means to become a bar or bat mitzvah. Learning as an ongoing process becomes more meaningful as these students relate their study to the continuation of the Jewish people. While studying aspects of their own journey, they are able to move toward leadership in our synagogue.

Hebrew study intensifies as participants begin receiving their Torah and haftarah portions. They are often called upon to help us lead t’filah services and are more comfortable in understanding the responsibility they have.
