FINDING OURSELVES IN THE ART OF THE FOUR CHILDREN: Erin Mason

There are many interpretations for the four children in our seder. What exactly does it mean to be simple, wise, wicked, or to not know how to ask? Over time, these questions have been responded to not only with words but also through artistic interpretation. Below is a sampling of some of the art that exists around the theme of the four children from “A Different Night,” by Noam Zion and David Dishon. This “Family Participation Haggadah” is designed to involve the entire family – from young children to senior adults. It includes ideas and educational activities that you can use during your seder, as well as explanations of traditions and themes.

Print these pieces out and pass them around your seder table. As you look at them, ask each other:

Which interpretation(s) resonates with you? Why?
Which interpretation is the most appropriate? Why?
Do any interpretations disturb you? Why?
Do you see yourself in any of these interpretations? Which one(s)? Why?

Passover is a holiday in which we, like the four children, are encouraged to ask questions. As you look at these pieces, allow yourself to ask any questions that arise, recognizing that the asking of the questions is just as important as the answers you discuss around your seder table.
