Tikkun Olam: Repairing the World

Tikkun Olam

Almost two millennia ago, Rabbi Tarfon taught, “You are not required to complete the work, but you cannot abstain from it.”

Looking at the world around us, the brokenness can be overwhelming and paralyzing. But our tradition teaches us that inaction is not an option. We have countless opportunities to do small things that can make a big impact.

Tikkun Olam, repairing the world around us, is a core value of Judaism. Helping the needy in our community is an integral part of who we are at Wilshire Boulevard Temple. We strive to bring people together as we engage in meaningful work and experience the pride and warmth of our Jewish community.

ONGOING OPPORTUNITIES

FEED THE HUNGRY

Hunger Doesn't Take a Vacation from Wilshire Boulevard Temple on Vimeo.

Our rabbis teach that when asked in the world to come, “What was your work?” and you answer: “I fed the hungry,” you will be told: “This is the house of God, enter into it, you who have fed the hungry.” For over two decades our Food Pantry has fed the hungry in our city. Now with locations at the Temple and in Santa Monica, it is easier than ever to get involved. It is one thing to make a sandwich or pack a lunch; it is another to actually distribute that lunch to a human being in need. Join us for a few hours on a Sunday morning and put your face on Social Action.

Dates & Times: Every Sunday
Locations:
Temple Campus – Davidson Patio 8:00 – 9:15 a.m. & Ocean Park Community Center (OPCC) – 503 Olympic Blvd., Santa Monica – 9:15 – 11:30 a.m.

HELP US HELP ONE HOMELESS FAMILY

The highest rung on Maimonides' "Ladder of Tzedakah" is to help the disadvantaged improve their own lives by teaching them how to help themselves.

There are approximately 8,000 homeless families in Los Angeles, and approximately 8,000 houses of worship. If each church, synagogue and mosque took responsibility for one family, we would end familial homelessness in our city—Imagine LA is based on this simple premise.

Imagine LA’s two-year program engages faith communities, existing service providers, and other stakeholders to address and eliminate family homelessness one family at a time. As a faith partner with Imagine LA, we have adopted a homeless family currently residing in “transitional housing,” mentoring them and supporting them as they transition into long-term housing and self-sufficiency. Speak with Rabbinic Intern Beau Shapiro to learn how you can help.

Locations: Temple and Irmas Campuses

Together with over 50,000 Angelenos, we will make a difference in the life of our city. Learn about and ensure that those in need have support, shelter, and sustenance as a direct result of our mitzvot. After all, it’s not necessarily what we do, it’s that we do something.
