Rabbi Harvey J. Fields, Ph.D., Emeritus
Rabbi Harvey J. Fields is native of Portland, Oregon and graduate of U.C.L.A. He was ordained in 1963 at Hebrew Union College, and received his Ph.D. in American Diplomatic History from Rutgers University in 1974. He has served congregations in Boston, Massachusetts, New Brunswick, New Jersey and Toronto, Canada. He served for 23 years as Senior Rabbi of Wilshire Boulevard Temple. After spearheading the creation of a new campus for the Temple, Rabbi Fields retired to become Rabbi Emeritus in June 2003.
He has served as President of Board of Rabbis of Southern California and chaired both the Inter-Religious Council of Southern California and the Jewish Community Relations Committee of the Los Angeles Jewish Federation. He was a member of Rebuild L.A and the Board of Governors of Jewish Agency for Israel.. Rabbi Fields was the Founding Chair of the Interfaith Coalition to Heal L..A.
Currently, he serves on the Executive Committee of the Israel Policy Forum and as Co-Chair of the new World Union for Progressive Judaism’s Israel Development Commission.
Rabbi Fields is known for his book on prayer,
B’chol Le-vavecha—With All Your Heart, and for his three volume ,i>A Torah Commentary For Our Time. He is currently completing
Called By God, a book on the Biblical prophets; a novel,
Dakota Dirt, about the American West of the 1880s, and a book of essays tentatively titled,
Miracle Juice.
Rabbi Fields resides in Los Angeles with his wife, Sybil, and is the father of Debra Fields and Jonathan Silberman, Joel Fields and Jessica Sultan, and of Rachel and Hanan Prishkolnick of Tel Aviv, and the grandfather of Rebecca, Ari, Jeremy, Noa and Amit.
