When Temple congregants Marnie Bodek and Cindy Feder started Women of Wilshire (WOW) in 2016, they had no idea how important their vision was. Their hunch was that there were women congregants who were smart and interesting and entering a new chapter in their lives as they turned 50 or older. With some on the verge of becoming empty nesters, some solidly already in that phase, and still others who had never had children, they anticipated that women like them would be interested in meeting and connecting. As WOW grew, and the need was clear, Susan Casamassima approached the co-chairs with a new idea: Dine Around Dinners.
The idea is similar to Dinners for 12 Strangers and other organizations that seek to connect women by bringing them around a table for a potluck dinner. The host provides the main course, and the participants bring the rest. At the end of each event, the women leave with a roster of the participants and a handful of new potential relationships.
“The interesting thing is that women meet new people at the Dine Around Dinners, and then coming to a larger event becomes easier because they have new friends to sit with,” said co-chair Bodek.
Her partner Feder agreed: “It’s amazing what an incredible portal Dine Arounds have become to getting involved with WOW. The dinners have become so popular that they often sell out the same day registration opens.”
If you’re interested in participating in a Dine Around Dinner, keep your eyes peeled for upcoming dates.
