Summer 2019 at Cal State University Channel Islands!

Have you heard the news? Camp Hess Kramer and Gindling Hilltop Camp (clap clap!) will be in full force this summer at Cal State University Channel Islands! This location allows us to retain the majority of our existing programs (yes, you can start getting excited for Beach Day), while also providing us with facilities for some terrific new ones. A full-size, kid-friendly kitchen on the bottom floor of the housing units will host our fresh and revamped cooking chug.

Purim with a Purpose, 2019: Matanot L’evyonim!

Purim with a Purpose is back, and this year, like last year, we are getting silly, celebrating, and creating a very special day of service and learning for our Religious School students. In our city, we have a large community of people living below the poverty level. We are partnering with our very own Karsh Family Social Service Center to work to improve the lives of our underserved neighbors by creating three types of gift bundles.

Annual Gala a Big Success!

On January 26, our Erika J. Glazer and Mann Family Early Childhood Centers held their Annual Gala, a Night at Studio Wilshire, at NeueHouse Hollywood. All proceeds from this amazing night help support the early childhood centers’ scholarship fund and operating budget. We are so grateful for the Gala committee members’ considerable work, and for all the generous supporters of this investment in our future.

Karsh Center

The stigma surrounding mental health issues, particularly in minority communities, prevents many individuals and families from getting the help they need. As part of our health and wellness programming at the Karsh Family Social Service Center, we invite clients to look past this stigma and recognize that utilizing mental health resources can be life-changing. It is one of the key ways the Karsh Center supports individuals so that they may stand with dignity and create a future in which they grow and thrive.

The "Sanctuary" of Shabbat

Here is a sneak peek of Cantor Lisa Peicott's Torah dissection of Parashat Vayakhel Exodus 35:1-38:20

Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel in his work The Sabbath wrote: “When history began, there was only one holiness in the world, holiness in time…the sanctity of time came first, the sanctity of man came second, and the sanctity of space came last. Time was hallowed by God at the very moment of creation; space, the Tabernacle, was consecrated by Moses.”

Makers Fair and Math and Science Nights Highlight Science and Innovation

Brawerman Elementary school students on both campuses donned their goggles, lab coats, and thinking caps last month for exciting nights exploring science and engineering. On Wednesday, February 13, Brawerman East hosted its first annual Makers Fair in honor of the 100th day of school. At Brawerman West on Thursday, February 21, students and parents gathered on campus for the third annual Math and Science Night. It was an enjoyable evening of shared explorations, activities, and learning.

You Make a Difference

Every week, Karsh Family Social Service Center volunteers and Wilshire Boulevard Temple congregants spend an average of 50 hours as Navigators at the Karsh Center, nearly 70 volunteer hours making and sharing sandwiches at the People Concern and packing food bags that they distribute at the Leanse Ratner Food Pantry.

We are so proud of the impact our volunteers made in 2018. Imagine what we can do in 2019!

B'nei Mitzvah in Israel and Purim with a Purpose

No words can describe the experience of sharing b’nei mitzvah in Israel with Wilshire Boulevard Temple students, their families, and Rabbi Eshel and his family. It was truly a special experience, and nine of the b’nei mitzvah student participants were from the Religious School! A big thank you to the Goldhirsh-Yellin Foundation, who provided a generous subsidy for all students having their Bar or Bat Mitzvah in Israel, in memory of Bernard and Wendy Goldhirsh.

Also keep an eye out for Purim with a Purpose (March 10 and March 17) and "Buy a Bundle!"
