The pandemic is taking a toll on us and our neighbors. We have been isolated from our families and friends, commerce has slowed to a crawl, and we are all yearning to return to our schools, our workplaces, our restaurants, our salons, and our normal ways of engaging with our community. We seem to be inching in that direction but still have a long way to go. Amidst all of this, we are overwhelmed with news of injustices and inequities that still exist in our country and continue to fuel divisions among our local and national communities.

I hope that you and your family are well and weathering these days as smoothly as possible. I know this is an incredibly challenging time for most, and the COVID-19 pandemic has changed everything. We are all feeling enormous uncertainty, and for some, it has been particularly difficult. We have nonetheless pushed through this together, keeping our community strong and supporting one another through a challenging time. I am writing with several updates about the remainder of this school year and to share some information about the summer and fall.

Kehillah is at the core of what makes Brawerman special. The fact that there is a virus that demands social distancing to slow its spread hits us precisely where it hurts us most. The thought of not spending the next several weeks with your children is difficult for our educators, and us, to process. Brawerman is our safe place, and it will remain our safe place, but right now we have made the decision to remain closed until the situation with the coronavirus improves.

We will continue to keep you updated as we gain more information. As you are aware, the situation is continually changing. The leadership of the Temple, the Schools, and the Camps are creating protocols for the entire community to follow in the case of an outbreak in our area. We will keep you apprised.

How does Coronavirus Spread?

Person-to-person spread

The virus is thought to spread mainly from person-to-person.

Between people who are in close contact with one another (within about 6 feet).
Via respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs or sneezes.
These droplets can land in the mouths or noses of people who are nearby or possibly be inhaled into the lungs.

Spread from contact with infected surfaces or objects

It may be possible that a person can get COVID-19 by touching a surface or object that has the virus on it and then touching their own mouth, nose, or possibly their eyes, but this is not thought to be the main way the virus spreads.

What preventative measures are taken at Wilshire Boulevard Temple?

There is currently no vaccine to prevent coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). The best way to prevent illness is to avoid being exposed to this virus. However, as a reminder, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) always recommends everyday actions to help prevent the spread of respiratory diseases, including:

Parents and children, please stay home when you are sick.
Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.
Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces using a regular household cleaning spray or wipe.
Follow CDC's recommendations for using a facemask.
- CDC does not recommend that people who are well wear a facemask to protect themselves from respiratory diseases, including COVID-19.
- Facemasks should be used by people who show symptoms of COVID-19 to help prevent the spread of the disease to others.
Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom, before eating, and after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.
- If soap and water are not readily available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol.
- If hands are visibly dirty, always wash them with soap and water.

How can I be prepared?

The Los Angeles Department of Public Health recommends the following for your home when you may not be able to leave for a few days:

Maintain a supply of food and water in the house as you would for any other emergency. The LADPH does not expect wide-spread closure, but areas may be impacted.
Have a communication plan with loved ones.

Purchase a supply kit for your home, office or car

The first 72 hours after a major emergency or disaster are critical. Electricity, gas, water, and telephones may not be working. In addition, public safety services such as police and fire departments will be busy handling serious crisis. You should be prepared to be self-sufficient - able to live without running water, electricity and/or gas, and telephones - for at least three days following a major emergency. These kits provide a good start to your emergency supply preparations.
