The trip represents the opportunity to pause, to marvel at the beauty of God’s creation—the way the deep blue sky frames the chalky mountains, the sun-dappled water glitters like a billion diamonds, and the bald eagles soar above. And the beauty of the fish themselves, wild, speckled with brown, orange, green, and gold—we fish without barbed hooks and we always quickly return those wild, brilliant creatures to their home after a picture or two. Then there’s the food, and the fun of telling fish stories and the same old jokes around a campfire. There are candles, there is kiddush and motzi around the table Friday night and a lesson from Torah on Shabbat morning. There are fathers and children bonding, sisters, old friends and new, all part of a large temple that quickly feels small and real. What more could one ask for than all of that?
