Gary Cohn's High Holy Days Reflection

Gary Cohn's High Holy Days Reflection

“I think it was 1973 and I was part of the young adults' group leading a worship service in Stalford Hall.  I was 19 years of age.  Steve Breuer came up to the choir and called to about six of us including my brother Barry Cohn, Phil Bubar, and Joel Saltzman.

He told us that a fire was approaching camp and we needed to go to Malibu to save what we could.  We then met in the Gelson’s parking lot in Studio City and loaded ourselves into the camp van with Steve and Stu Simmons.

It was one of the scariest moments of my life.  Walking horses down the trail from Hilltop to the beach.  Collecting what we could save. Hot and smoky but that year the camp was not burned.

Those of us who went on this somewhat weird spiritual journey are still friends to this day celebrating Shabbat once a month together.”
